Keep your Company’s Reputation Safe – with Regular Driver Risk Assessments & Bespoke Fleet Driver Training

If you’re a fleet manager, HR manager, company director or business owner, you could face criminal prosecution if you and your staff are not properly trained in work-related road safety.

How much do you really know about your employees’ driving ability and road safety attitude – aside from what’s on their driving licence? Distractions, ignorance, bad habits and illegal driving can all land you, as the employer, in very hot water. You’re required by law to put in place measures to maximise and maintain safety on any road journey made on behalf of your business. You have a duty to risk-assess and regularly review every person in your business who drives as part of their daily work, to check that vehicles are maintained and used properly and to provide work-related road safety training.

If you fail to do this, and an employee is killed while driving for work, or someone is killed by one of your employees out on the road, you could be charged with a criminal offence under the new Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act, which came into force in 2008.

Ultimately, you could go to prison – even if you’re a sole trader or freelance That’s why CAT Driver Training provides bespoke risk assessment programmes and work-related driver training – to raise awareness of the legislation and to help companies stay up-to-date and compliant.

  • Perhaps you’re a company director, senior manager, line manager or HR manager with a team of people out on the road – or commuting to different places of work. What are you doing to protect your staff and other road users?
  • Maybe you’re a fleet manager who deploys and maintains your company’s vehicles (including cars, motorcycles, vans and trucks – plus the ‘grey fleet’ of employee-owned vehicles). Are you confident you’re operating within the law?
  • Perhaps you’re a small business owner or even self-employed. Did you know that, however small your business, the law applies to you, too? It also applies whatever the age of the driver and whether you drive on public or private roads.

The new legislation is not about general road traffic law. Rather, it embraces specific aspects of health and safety at work. Driving is now the most dangerous occupational activity and is the single biggest cause of death at work. One in three road crashes in the UK involves someone driving for work, as do half of the 3000 fatalities on the roads each year. There are 2–3 work-related road deaths per day in the UK and 250–300 serious injuries.

Driver Training Will Save You Money

motorwaycongestionThe true cost of road accidents is immense. A fatality can destroy a company’s reputation, as well as the lives of all those involved. You may already have a road safety programme in place, but your team may need a fresh injection of awareness, especially if the training they’ve had before has been ‘text book’ rather than practical and hands-on.

Take a look at your current health and safety systems. Do they cover work-related road safety? And how often do you risk-assess and review each person? The immediate and knock-on benefits are immeasurable:

  • Avoid the Risk of Litigation
  • Comply fully with health and safety regulation
  • Uphold your reputation as a responsible employer and promote greater staff morale and wellbeing
  • Keep your staff safe on the road at all times and reduce injury leave
  • Help your drivers make safer driving decisions, reduce accidents and avoid the associated financial and human costs
You can increase safety for company car drivers, new drivers, nervous drivers, new employees, drivers travelling abroad and also staff recruited from overseas who need UK road familiarisation.
