Our last article found us exploring the concept of single input steering - minimising driver control inputs to optimise tyre slip angles. We discussed best practice techniques, minimising weight transfer through the platform of the vehicle, maximising the available grip from the tyre through a corner at speed. So how do we squeeze the last nugget of grip from our tyres consistently lap after lap? Let’s go to work on circuit and find out.

The beginnings of a strong relationship
2008 has been a great year for CAT Driver Training. Track and circuit tuition, our core business, has developed beyond our projections for the year - Millbrook now feels like my second home. A percentage of our accelerated growth is down to our association with the MLR. Our first event for the MLR went well in October 2007. We must have pressed the right buttons, as January this year found Jo and I enjoying a meal with Darin, Chell and Mick discussing driver training plans for 2008.

Let me ask you a question. How many times on the road or circuit have you attempted to drive through a corner describing the correct line, but only turning the steering wheel once? Turning the wheel at the entry to the corner and holding the wheel on the described radius through the turn, unwinding the steering as the road straightens, avoiding any unnecessary input and remaining in the correct position on the road? Sounds difficult? Never thought about it? Or perhaps you think it`s not possible…….

I would have to go back to the 80’s for my last performance Saab experience: the 900 Turbo. Super charging and turbo charging have been with us for decades - we were forcing air and fuel by these mediums into cars and planes all the way back in the 1930’s. By introducing the turbo to their engine line up, Saab changed the motoring public perception of them overnight. 30 years on the turbo is now synonymous with the brand. If I think of a Saab turbo it is always a black 900: the rocket ship of the era. Who needed a sports car? The turbo had arrived!
